Social Networking in the Democratic Party Week 20: Tracking the electronic campaign.

Social Networking sites are primarily used by millions of e-generationers, computer age adults of late teens through thirty somethings, to communicate with friends and family. But this presidential election cycle many e-generationers are doing something different with these social networking sites, they are showing their political support on their personal pages so that all can see. And I am here to compare the amount of support each candidate has so far.

This is the weekly report on how the Democratic Presidential Candidates are faring in the world of Social Networking.

Social Networking in the Democratic Party Week 19: Tracking the electronic campaign.

Starting this week I have added Facebook to the list of Social Networking sites I will be tracking. This will give us 3 major sites that are being used by the democratic campaigns to drum up support for their respective campaigns. By watching these sites you can spot trends forming and who knows maybe one of the lower tier candidates might catch fire online and catapult themselves to the front of the pack come January.

Barack Obama: Very Strong week. The normal solid week from Obama as he was #1 in new friends added for the week along with taking the total friend lead.

Hillary Clinton: Very Strong Week. Despite losing the total friend lead to Obama continues strong weekly gains.

John Edwards: Consistent week. Still remains the 3rd most popular choice.

Dennis Kucinich: Consistent week. Continues to distance himself from the rest of 2nd tier candidates.

Bill Richardson: Consistent week.

Joe Biden: Poor week. Inconsistency plagues him as he had 2nd fewest number of new friends this week.

Mike Gravel: Consistent week. Moved up to #7 in the power rankings as he added more friends then Biden and Dodd this week.

Chris Dodd: Continues his consistency of pitiful performances. Needs a miracle at this point in time as he is #8 in the power rankings.

Bill Richardson: Consistent week. Gained a spot in the power rankings after having the 3rd highest number of new subscriptions this week.

There was a mix up this past week on MySpace. It turns out that Barack Obama campaign was using a supportor made profile as his campaign profile. The supportor made profile is now not part of the campaign, as the campaign officially launched a campaign profile. Due to this situation I have dropped Obama from the top spot in which he occupied the first 4 weeks down to 3rd spot in the power rankings. Hillary Clinton is now on top of the power rankings. Clinton had a great week distancing herself from the pack by adding (26,556) new friends this week. John Edwards is staying steady so I bumped him up to 2nd place this week in wake of the Obama fallout. The second tier candidate race is beginning to get interesting as it seems Dennis Kucinich's campaign is really working on maximizing his exposure with the social networks. Kucinich had a very strong week by adding (5,986) new friends this week, if this continues we could see him challenging the big 3 this summer. For the rest of the second tier, everything remained pretty steady with Joe Biden continuing to close in on Bill Richardson with Chris Dodd stumbling around hopelessly.

Barack Obama reclaimed the top spot on YouTube as he had yet another strong week. The suprise of the week was Dennis Kucinich, as he had the most new subscriptions (462). Kucinich is becoming a a favorite on YouTube as he has responded directly back to several other YouTubers. That could become a trademark of the Kucinich campaign if he continues with the brillant idea. Due to his strong showing I moved Kucinich up to 2nd place to see if he can repeat his showing. John Edwards' run of great weeks slowed quite abit so he feel down to 3rd in the power rankings. Hillary Clinton is not making as big of splash as other canididates on video but as of right now she don't need to. Second tier candidates lost Dennis Kucinich for at least a week but added Mike Gravel. Gravel was finally added to the YouChoose promotion which now makes him a factor. Joe Biden moved past Bill Richardson for 5th spot this week as this looks to be a long term dogfight. Gravel entered in 7th place in the power rankings as he has a nice stash of subscriptions(678). Chris Dodd is just not making any ground in either social network and probally will be holding the rear down for some time.

Social Networking in the Democratic Party Week 4: Kucinich makes move on MySpace while Edwards takes top spot on YouTube

Barack Obama remains the trend-setter in Week 4 on MySpace, as he continues to pick up more friends than any other candidate. Hillary Clinton continues to build a cushion between herself and John Edwards as she has now outfriended Edwards three consecutive weeks. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates and they all had decent weeks by their standards by each adding over 1500 friends each. Second tier candidate of the week goes to Dennis Kucinich. Kucinich made the only move in the power rankings, moving past Bill Richardson after a super week.

John Edwards stopped Barack Obama's dominance on YouTube. I have moved Edwards up to the top of the power rankings after his second consecutive strong week. He received (300) more subscriptions than Obama. Hillary Clinton did not fair as well on YouTube this past week as she barely beat out second tier candidates in subscriptions received. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates but Dennis Kucinich is slowly distancing himself out of the crowd and with his impeachment of Cheney now filed, I could see him get even stronger in the coming weeks. The best matchup I see over the next few weeks will be Bill Richardson and Joe Biden. Richardson is only (44) subscriptions ahead of Biden. One thing for certain is Chris Dodd has no support coming in on the social networks to date. Over the past 3 weeks, Dodd has gained only (41) YouTube subscriptions which is not going to cut it for a candidate needing to spread his meassage.

Barack Obama remains the trend-setter in Week 3 on MySpace as he continues to pick up more friends than any other candidate. In fact this past week Obama added more friends that any other candidate has total friends. The past week was also very productive for Hillary Clinton as she friended as many people as any of the second tier candidates have total friends. John Edwards had a very dismal week as 4 other candidates added more friends than him. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates and they all had decent weeks by their standards by each adding over 1000 friends each. The candidate I have my eye on is Bill Richardson. Richardson added 2500 friends this week which was 3rd best. If he continues this pattern over the next couple months he could see himself neck and neck with John Edwards.

John Edwards stopped Barack Obama's dominance on YouTube. Edwards jumped back to 2nd in the power rankings with top week in subscriptions received. He received (37) more subscriptions than Obama. Hillary Clinton did not fair as well on YouTube this past week as she barely beat out second teir candidates in subscriptions received. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates but Dennis Kucinich is slowly distancing himself out of the crowd. Kucinich received a total number of subscriptions (68) greater than the Richardson, Biden and Dodd combined (58). One thing for certain is Chris Dodd has no support coming in on the social networks to date. Over the past 2 weeks Dodd has gained only (25) YouTube subscriptions which is not going to cut it for a candidate needing to spread his meassage.

Barack Obama remains the trend-setter in Week 2 on MySpace as he continues to pick up more friends than any other candidate. The only change in the power rankings this week was I moved Hillary Clinton up to second spot. The past week was more productive for Clinton as she friended twice as many people as the previous second place John Edwards. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates and there was no real movement this past week for any of them.

Barack Obama remains the trend-setter in Week 2 on YouTube as he continues to pick up more subscriptions than any other candidate. The only change in the power rankings this week was I moved Hillary Clinton up to second spot. This past week was more productive for Clinton as she gathered 42 more subscriptions than the previous second place John Edwards. Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates and there was no real movement this past week for any of them. Then there is Chris Dodd who is not having much luck at all with this social networking thing. Attention Senator Dodd, maybe you should hire up a couple college students to help craft a social networking plan that will be competitive with the rest.

Social Networking in the Democratic Party Week 1: Obama is early trend setter on both YouTube and MySpace

Social networking looks like it is going to be a efficient way for the candidates to get there name and views out to the masses this election cycle. So I have decided to pick up on it and will be doing weekly analyzing of the Democrats. For the time being I will only focus my attention on the 2 networking sites who have actually made specific pages for the candidates, namely YouTube "You Choose" and MySpace Imapct.

#3 Hillary Clinton8631 - -

#5 Dennis Kucinich1905 - -
#6 Joe Biden1494 - -
#7 Chris Dodd642 - -

Barack Obama is far and away the trend setter in Week 1 on MySpace. But the true strength of his MySpace page will be seen over the coming weeks as he has a gigantic lead due in part to his carry over of his page from before to MySpace Impact. Obama and Edwards were the only Democratic candidates that did not start a new MySpace page when MySpace initiated the Impact program. John Edwards has a considerable lead over 3rd place Hillary Clinton but like I said before time will test the strength of the Edwards page.

Second tier candidates are a considerible distance behind the top tier candidates. But they are bunched together so who pokes ahead of the rest may become a viable candidate. Bill Richardson leads in the second tier pack, with Dennis Kucinich and Joe Biden in reasonable range. Chris Dodd is the bottom feeder on MySpace with only a fraction of friends of even the second tier candidates and it appears they aren't using social networking to the extent of the other campaigns.

Barack Obama is far and away the trend setter in week 1 on YouTube. Obama is handily ahead of the other top tier candidates John Edwards and Hillary Clinton who have very similar numbers to each other so far. On the other end of the spectrum Chris Dodd must not be putting much effort so far into the social networking as he is not getting much support at all. He is barely registering a 1/3 the support of his nearest rivals Joe Biden and Bill Richardson. And all to his lonesome stuck out in the middle is Dennis Kucinich whom over the next few weeks his pace will decide if he can make a move towards the top or will he fall to the trenches.
