Kucinich: Interim Progress Report Confirms Now Is the Time to Begin Bringing Our Troops Home
Washington, Jul 12 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) released the following statement following President Bush’s news conference on the Iraq benchmark interim progress report the White House issued today.
“The Administration has been downplaying the significance of this report all week because they knew the news was grim,” Kucinich said. “The President claims that pulling the troops out now would be dangerous to the region. Isn’t the U.S. occupation already counterproductive to the region? There are more than 3,600 Americans and an estimated one million innocent Iraqis dead because of our continued presence there!
“We do not have to fund the war. We must tell the President NO to any additional funding. No legislation is required. No vote is required. We have the money to bring the troops home. It does not require a vote. The only thing required is honesty, integrity and a willingness to end the war.
“The report states the Iraqi government is not making satisfactory progress toward enacting a law that would privatize their own oil. There has been a broad deception about the content of the hydrocarbon law, a deception which has taken in Members of Congress and the media.
“Misdescribed tactically as a revenue sharing plan, it is in fact a radical plan to privatize Iraq’s oil. The attempted theft of the oil assets of Iraq under the guise of a plan to end the war will keep the war going long into the future.
“The President has requested additional time for his Iraq strategy. Time for what? Time to privatize Iraq’s oil? Time to change the subject with an attack on Iran? Congress must act to end this war and end it now.”
Kucinich: Troop Redeployment Bill Will Not End The War
The Only Way To End The War Is To Say NO To Any Additional Funding
Washington, Jul 12 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement following his vote against HR 2956, the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act.
“We’ve lost over 3,600 of our brave service men and women. An estimated one million innocent Iraqis have perished in the war. We’re now telling Iraqis, whose country the U.S. destroyed, whose reconstruction funds the U.S. mishandled, whose social networks have been shredded: Stand on your own feet! We try to steal their oil under the cover of occupation,” Kucinich said in a debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today.
“This bill will not end the war. This bill will not end the occupation. It doesn’t take a vote to end this war. We must inform the Administration that the $97 billion appropriated last month is the end of the financing for the war.
“Use the money that’s in the pipeline through October 1 to bring the troops home. Compel the President to put together an international peacekeeping and security force which would move in as our troops leave.
“We could have our troops home by October 1. The question is whether we are ready to take a stand to do that, or whether we are going to vote on resolutions that give the American people the appearance that we want to end the war, without actually addressing the central issue that will end the war. Stop the funding.”
Kucinich: Administration Plays “Fear Card”
Intel Selectively Leaked To Shore Up Support For Iraq War
Washington, Jul 11 - The Bush Administration is once again playing the “fear card” as Congress continues to debate how to get out of Iraq.
“This Administration is drumming up fear in order to protect its war agenda,” said Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).
News reports over the last two days claim:
• “New intelligence suggests an Al Qaeda cell may be in the United States or on its way.”
–‘Sources’ tell ABC News, July 10, 2007
• “U.S. counterterror officials are warning of an increased risk of an attack this summer, given al-Qaida’s apparent interest in summertime strikes and increased al-Qaida training in the Afghan-Pakistani border region. On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the editorial board of The Chicago Tribune that he had a “gut feeling” about a new period of increased risk.” –Associated Press, July 11, 2007
• “Fearing complacency among the American people over possible terror threats, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said…that the nation faces a heightened chance of an attack this summer. ‘We could easily be attacked,’ Chertoff added. ‘The intent to attack us remains as strong as it was on Sept. 10, 2001.’” –The Chicago Tribune, July 11, 2007
“The Administration is desperately seeking support for its failed war strategy. ‘Anonymous sources,’ ‘gut feelings,’ what does all of this add up to? Throughout the early stages of the Iraq war a strategy of deception led by the Lincoln and the Rendon groups was used to create fear and more war. No evidence has been made public to suggest an attack on the United States this summer, just as there was no evidence that Iraq was harboring Weapons of Mass Destruction.
“Yesterday the President asked Congress for additional time before passing judgment on his Iraq war strategy. The President is on a mission: To get more money for his war. Congress must also be held accountable and not fall into the Administration’s trap. We do not have to fund the war. We have the money to bring the troops home. It does not require a vote. It requires determination and truth,” Kucinich concluded.
Kucinich Mourns the Loss of Lady Bird Johnson
Washington, Jul 11 - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) released the following statement after learning former first lady Lady Bird Johnson died at the age of 94.
“My wife Elizabeth and I send our deepest sympathies to the Johnson family during this difficult time. We are mourning the loss of a great American who continued to give so much to her country,” Kucinich said.
“Lady Bird Johnson’s environmental consciousness should serve as an example for all to live by. She focused on beatifications, specifically cleaning up unsightly billboards and worked tirelessly to improve the aesthetics of our nation’s highways.
“She stood by President Johnson during some of the most difficult events in America’s modern history and provided support and strength to her husband. Lady Bird worked persistently for her husband’s political ambitions, but always valued her family above all.
“Her death is not only a great loss for the Johnson family, but it is a loss for the nation as well. The former first lady will be greatly missed. Elizabeth and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the Johnson family at this time.”
President Bush Visits Cleveland But Keeps Making War
Kucinich Says Domestic Agenda Consumed by Iraq War
Washington, Jul 10 - As President Bush visits the Congressional District of Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today, the Ohio Congressman called on the President to start paying attention to the needs of America’s cities, listen to a majority of the American people and end the war in Iraq.
"The President’s visit to the Cleveland area was allegedly to focus on a non-existent domestic agenda. But even when he comes to one of America’s most economically distressed areas, all he has to offer is more war. Like many American cities, Cleveland and its inner ring suburbs, like Parma, have been ignored while the President prosecutes this illegal war. The entire domestic agenda but been pushed aside because of the war. This President is intent on staying in Iraq, through the end of his term, so he can use America’s military to privatize Iraq’s oil,” Kucinich said.
Earlier this year, Congress gave the President $97 billion in additional funding to keep the war going through October 1, 2007. This week, the U.S. Senate is expected to take up its version of the 2008 defense authorization bill, which would authorize more than $600 billion in defense spending -- with an additional $127 billion authorized for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“This Democratic Congress, which was elected to end the war, must take a stand. It must tell the President that it will provide no more funds. The only way to end this war is to refuse to provide more funding. Threatening the Iraqis that we will pull out unless they privatize their oil is a plan for unending war. We must tell the President NOW there will be no more funds. He must go to the international community and put together an international peacekeeping and security mission to stabilize Iraq as the U.S. troops leave. These are the elements of a plan which I have been offering for the past four years,” Kucinich said.
“The Senate, unfortunately, is in the middle of another one of its famous fake debates on the war. We do not have to have a vote on whether or not there is to be more funding. The money is in the pipeline right now to end the war and bring our troops home. We can simply refuse to provide a bill which appropriates more money for the Iraq war. This President must be held accountable. This Congress must also be held accountable. The American people are waiting for us to provide real leadership to show the way out of Iraq. And our troops are waiting to see if we care more about their precious lives than about party politics,” Kucinich concluded.
Kucinich: Iraq Four Years Too Long
Can Iran Be Far Behind?
Washington, Jul 10 - Following President Bush’s town hall meeting from Cleveland, Ohio, today, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) released the following statement:
“The President has requested additional time for his Iraq strategy. Time for what? Time to privatize Iraq’s oil? Time to change the subject with an attack on Iran? Congress must act to end this war and end it now.
“We must tell the President NO to any additional funding. No legislation is required. No vote is required. The only thing required is honesty, integrity and a willingness to end the war.
“The war is based on lies. The President and the Vice President have no credibility whatsoever on matters relating to our national defense. They sent more than 3,600 of our brave men and women to their deaths. They are responsible for creating the conditions that have led to the deaths of an estimated one million innocent Iraqis. They have set in motion spending for Iraq which could top one trillion dollars. They now have three aircraft carriers in the Gulf (although some news reports claim that one carrier will leave the area), setting the stage for an attack on Iran.
“What will it take for Congress to wake up and tell the American people the truth? We do not have to fund the war. We have the money to bring the troops home. It does not require a vote. It requires determination and truth,” Kucinich concluded.

More than half of Americans support Kucinich’s call to impeach Cheney, poll shows
Other Democratic Presidential candidates oppose it
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, July 06, 2007
CLEVELAND, OH – More than half of all Americans support bringing Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney, according to a poll released today. Articles of Impeachment were filed in April by Ohio Congressman and Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, and it has 14 co-sponsors.
According to the New Hampshire-based American Research Group, 54% of adults favor proceeding with impeachment proceedings against Cheney. Among Democrats, the support for impeachment is 76%, and among those who identified themselves as "Independents," the support is 51%. Even 17% of Republicans said they favor impeachment.
The poll was based on 1,100 interviews among a random sample of adults nationwide July 3 – 5. Of the total sample, 933 interviews were completed with registered voters.
When he introduced his bill (H.R. 333), Kucinich said, "The Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. He has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive us about the relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda. And he openly lied to the America people and has publicly threatened aggression against Iran."
Kucinich also said at the time that he was acting in "response to the concerns of millions of Americans who have felt that the Vice President must be accountable for his false statements." The poll results appear to prove he was right. None of the other Democratic Presidential candidates has expressed support for Kucinich's bill.
"It's not a happy day when most Americans believe that the Vice President of the United States lied, deceived, misled the American people and violated his oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution -- not to mention the other actions and abuses that are beginning to attract Congressional attention," Kucinich said. "But," he added, "every elected official in this nation, especially the highest elected officials, must be held accountable for their actions; and impeachment is the Constitutional mechanism to hold the Vice President accountable and to protect our democracy."
National polls have also shown an overwhelming support for Kucinich's other key positions: withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, a national health insurance plan that covers all Americans, the repeal of disastrous trade policies, specifically NAFTA, and the erosion of civil liberties enabled by the passage of the so-called Patriot Act.
Sen. Hillary Clinton's refusal to answer steelworkers' questions both troubling and revealing
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friday, July 06, 2007
CLEVELAND OH -- The Kucinich for President Campaign issued the following statement this afternoon:
"It is deeply troubling, but, perhaps, very revealing, when a Democratic candidate for the Presidency of the United States seeks the support of one of the most important industrial labor unions in the nation but refuses to answer questions from the rank and file union members.
"That's what happened today when U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton addressed the United Steelworkers conference in Cleveland. Not only did she not participate in the question-and-answer portion of the program to which all of the Presidential candidates had agreed, but she also completely ignored one of the major issues that has forced millions of union workers and others into unemployment: the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
"Yesterday, Congressman Dennis Kucinich, U.S. Senator Joe Biden, and former Senator John Edwards held to their commitment to the USW to answer any and all questions from union members for 30 minutes each.
"It borders on arrogance for a Democrat to deliver pro-union promises and platitudes in prepared remarks, but then refuse to engage in an honest and open conversation with workers whose lives have been profoundly impacted by disastrous trade policies -- especially NAFTA, which was enacted during the Clinton Administration.
"Does Senator Clinton support NAFTA? Will she attempt to "fix it," as former Senator Edwards proposed yesterday? Or will she have the courage to repeal it, as only Congressman Kucinich has proposed? Members of the steelworkers union and other industrialized unions did not get any answers because they weren't permitted to ask the questions.
"Candidates have an obligation to go beyond orchestrated and scripted performances, answer tough questions, and address serious issues. If they calculate that it is preferable to side-step that obligation when they are trying to win votes, voters will be left wondering where those candidates really stand and what they will really do if elected. If anything, Senator Clinton has an even higher obligation to address this issue because NAFTA was enacted during the Clinton Administration. Someone needs to ask where the Senator stands. And the Senator has a responsibility to answer."

Kucinich Urges EPA Let California Control Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Washington, Jun 16 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — Six term Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio has asked the United States EPA to approve California's request to set its own standards for greenhouse gas emissions. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA can grant permission to California to set air quality standards in the interest of protecting public health and the environment.
"California is entitled to step forward to regulate greenhouse gases, especially when the EPA is not doing its job. The EPA must grant California a waiver. Another eleven states are prepared to take responsibility for reductions in greenhouse gases. Unfortunately reducing greenhouse gas is not a priority of the Bush Administration. They clearly do not want to do exercise responsibility or authority. They must permit those states that are prepared to protect public health and the environment, as is California, to act," Kucinich said.
Kucinich acted in response to a request by California Attorney General Jerry Brown. Kucinich spoke with Brown today. He and Brown worked together to promote progressive environmental policies at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in the summer of 2002.
Hamas Victory Is The Result of Bush Strategic Political Failure
Washington, Jun 15 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to news reports about ongoing violence in Gaza, Rep. Dennis Kucinich released the following statement.
“The chaos and factional violence in Gaza that ultimately led to the Hamas military takeover of the Presidential Compound and the National Security Guard building demonstrates a failure of President Bush’s strategy in matters relating to Hamas.
“The humanitarian, economic and political boycott imposed on the elected Hamas government were meant to force Hamas to accept U.S. and Israeli conditions or alternatively to force it out of power.
“The boycott has accomplished neither goal and instead has created a severe humanitarian crisis that is now marred by political factionalism, violence, and unrest.
Since the suspension of aid to the Palestinian Authority began in April 2006, one out of every fifteen families in the Occupied Territories has run a debt exceeding $25,000 typically for water, electricity, and food. The number of people living on less than 50 cents a day has risen to more than a million. The Palestinian Authority budget has shrunk from $1.5 billion annually to $500 million. This has created a dire situation when the Palestinian Authority is responsible for 1,600 schools and 400 hospitals and medical centers.
The UN Middle East envoy, Alvaro de Soto, claims that the conditions set by the Quartet, the EU, the US, the UN, and Russia, are "unattainable." Additionally, a leaked memo written in May and printed in the Guardian this week, de Soto confirmed that the US pressured Mahmoud Abbas to refuse Hamas' initial invitation to form a "national unity government."
If we are to return to the path of Middle East peace, Congress must pressure the Administration to:
1. Announce that the U.S. will immediately extend diplomatic recognition to the former national unity government coalition of Hamas and Fatah;
2. Ask for the reconstitution of the coalition government;
3. Initiate high level diplomatic talks in the region, including representatives chosen by the coalition government;
4. Send emergency food and medical aid to Gaza, under auspices of UN and NGOs.
Kucinich: Impeachment Resolution Gains Momentum in House of Representatives
Washington, Jun 13 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — Below is Congressman Dennis Kucinich’s (D-OH) statement from a press conference that he held with Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) today.
“Over a month ago, I stood up on behalf of the America people who were expressing concern about whether or not Congress was going to respond to the trampling of our Constitution that was going on.
“And the Articles of Impeachment that I introduced against the Vice President represented a response to the concerns of millions of Americans who have felt that the Vice President must be accountable for his false statements which accelerate the United States toward war by false claims of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, of false claims of Iraq’s connection to al Qaeda and 9/11 and false claims of Iraq’s intention to attack the United States.
“The Vice President’s statements with respect to beating the drums of war against Iran were also in the Articles of Impeachment.
“Since the introduction of the resolution the Vice President has continued along the path of conduct that led me to file the articles of Impeachment.
“The Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. He has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive us about the relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda. And he openly lied to the America people and has publicly threatened aggression against Iran.
“Since the introduction, seven Members of Congress have signed on as co-sponsors of the resolution. They are Albert Wynn (D-MD), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Maxine Waters (D-CA). Congresswomen Lee and Woolsey are co-chairs of the Progressive Caucus, the largest caucus in the Democratic Party.
“And with me now is the most recent cosponsor of H.Res. 333 – a woman who’s the driving force in organizing Democrats to try to come up with a strategy to try and take this country out of Iraq – Maxine Waters.
“Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ support on this issue is of national significance. She has demonstrated a capacity for courage and determination that everyone knows and everyone respects. And I’m proud to have her join this effort.
“I believe this is another milestone. With the support of the leaders of the Progressive Caucus and the leader of the Out of Iraq Caucus we will see more and more Members of Congress signing on in this effort to save our Constitution and protect the very values that bind us as a nation.”

Kucinich Introduces Bill to Exemplify Importance of the Underground Railroad
Washington, Jun 13 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), along with his Ohio colleagues Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Jean Schmidt introduced the bipartisan Underground Railroad Educational and Cultural Program Act of 2007. Senator Sherrod Brown introduced the same bill in the Senate.
This legislation will re-authorize a competitive grant program administered by the Department of Education to research, display, interpret and collect artifacts relating to the history of the Underground Railroad.
“This important effort will educate citizens across the country and around the world about the Underground Railroad movement in America,” Kucinich said. “This legislation will ensure a strong public-private partnership exists to supplement and leverage federal resources along with funds collected at the state and local level.”
“During one of the darkest eras in our history, a group of courageous Americans, both black and white, free and enslaved, bound together to form what would be known as the Underground Railroad.
“This racially integrated movement to bring about social change has familiar heroes such as Harriet Tubman, William Still, John Rankin and Susan B. Anthony, but there are thousands more who risked their lives to help others escape the clutches of slavery as they fled to the North.”
The Underground Railroad Educational and Culture Program Act of 2007 would provide competitive grants to non-profit organizations around the United States to shed light on one of the most important and courageous social movements in our history while preserving and interpreting artifacts found from this critical era.
